Google has just completed a 22 page report regarding the prevalence of Malware sites within it's index.  Results from Google indicate that a staggering 1.3% of all search engine queries are now directing users to at least one malware site.  Google has also done tests on Anti-virus tools and the results have indicated that of the best anti-virus tools available only seven out of ten threats will be detected.

Google's research indicates that there are more than 3.4 million URLS containing malware in the index, distributed among 181,000 websites.  One year ago the rate of malware-containing links was only 0.3%.

With regards to Antivirus software, Google found that a detection rate of 70% was achievable from the best ant-virus engines with the latest set of definitions.  Google has called for greater protection from "drive-by" downloaded malware.  Google examined approximately 66.5 million URLS for this report.
